Public Speaking
How to help your child to prepare for Public Speaking.
Having a weekly Public Speaking Time is an important part of our Oral Language Program. The children gain skills in speaking clearly and organising their thoughts. They also learn to listen attentively, make comments, ask questions and expand their vocabularies. They learn a lot from listening to other people’s experiences and get to know more about their classmates. We also encourage the children to ask interesting questions (ones that give us more information) using "question" words similar to those show further down the page.
On your child’s day please check that he/she has prepared something to say. This can be an enjoyable time when you just discuss the topic with your child. Often parents have important background information about something that a child chooses to share and they love to hear this from their parents.
Depending on the topic this may include such things as
The topic list is a guideline so that they have a focus each week. At times your child might have something really special to share that is unrelated to the weekly topic. We are happy to hear about these experiences.
